Active in the Harlem Renaissance, artist, painter, sculptor, illustrator, muralist, and teacher Charles Henry Alston (1907–1977) was the first African-American supervisor for the Works Progress Administration's (WPA) Federal Art Project. His murals grace the Harlem Hospital and Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Company.
