My experience of it (at least wrt foobar2000) is that an album should be grouped by "album artist" as opposed to "artist" because there could be multiple contributing artist to an album. I believe a very common approach is for each track to have its own artist (if applicable) and then the entire album to have the same "album artist".

Mar 25, 2018 · But then I'll hear something and wonder what it's called/what album it's on etc. If it happens to be on a 'various artists' album, say called 'VA', it'll be listed as 'VA' album name, 'random artist from one of the tracks' album artist, though the track artist will be correct. Not a showstopper for me but WHY is it so difficult to do this right?
