Born in a wigwam, she was the descendant of two prominent French Canadian-Winnebago Native American chiefs. Her Winnebago tribal name was Hinook-Mahiwi-Kalinaka (Fleecy Cloud Floating in Space), and she was a member of the Thunderbird clan.
