In 17 of his approximately 35 paintings he depicted subjects from Washington Irving’s stories: e.g., the paintings Ichabod Crane at the Van Tassel’s Ball (1855), The Money Diggers (1832), and Rip Van Winkle (1829).

John Quidor was born in Tappan, New York, in 1801, and nine years later his family moved to New York City. He received his only artistic training, at the age of seventeen, in a brief apprenticeship to the successful portrait painter John Wesley Jarvis.
