Nev Ackroyd was born in Nelson, Lancashire. After studying art at Harris College, Preston, he gained a teaching qualification from Manchester University. He taught art in secondary schools in London until 1989, when he moved to Cornwall. He continued teaching until 1997, when he began to paint fulltime.
