The best known of these artists - Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) and Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) - were both known to have undertaken detailed anatomical dissections at various points in their long careers. The dissections allowed Renaissance artists to observe and draw elements of the human body which had never been seen before and in accurate detail.

Italian Renaissance artists became anatomists by necessity, as they attempted to refine a more lifelike, sculptural portrayal of the human figure. Opportunities for direct anatomical dissection were very restricted during the Renaissance.
