    Renowned Canterbury artist Austen Deans has died. Deans, 96, who lived much of his life at Peel Forest in mid Canterbury, died in Princess Margaret Hospital 18 October. He had suffered a stroke 10 days earlier. Deans, a descendant of one of the founding Canterbury families of the same name, was well known for his traditional landscape paintings.

    Oct 19, 2011 · Born at Riccarton House, Christchurch in 1915, Austin Deans grew up on the family farm near Sheffield in North Canterbury (and near Kowai, the subject of this 1952 painting). He trained at the Canterbury College School of Art between 1934 and 1938, where he continued his interest in the outdoors through membership of the College tramping club.
