Chartist Lives: Benjamin Rushton Rushton, a hand-loom weaver and radical agitator, was born at Dewsbury in Yorkshire, but later moved to Halifax, where he found employment as a fancy-worsted weaver, residing at Friendly Fold in the village of Ovenden.

It was then that Harriet Dell rediscovered the tombstone of Chartist orator Benjamin Rushton in an overgrown and remote part of the Cemetery, and assisted by others, began to research this little-remembered hero of the 1840s working classes. Ben Rushton was born at Dewsbury in 1785, moving to Halifax in his youth, to work as a handloom weaver.

Little wonder that Ben Rushton’s funeral in June 1853 was turned into a huge Chartist demonstration. His friend Christopher Shackleton also died in that year. It was fitting that the two men were buried side by side. Kit Shackleton was also a handloom weaver, and throughout the 1840s was a key Chartist organizer and speaker in the West Riding.

Buried next to Rushton was another leading local figure in the movement Christopher Shackleton - his headstone has not survived and a modern plaque marks his burial place.
