Following his release, Spira fled to Paris in August 1938, where he assumed the more symbolic name of Bill Freier (meaning "more free").

In 1944 Blechhammer, originally founded as a forced labour camp for Jews, became part of the Auschwitz complex. The camp provided labourers for a number of industries in Upper Silesia.
