Brandi Downs (Bessie Douglas) taught Art in Dallas Public Schools and in the New Orleans Senior Program. She worked at Jackson Square as a portrait artist for more than 30 years. She has a BFA from MSCW (now MUW, in Columbus, MS.) At the age of 84, she is still teaching Advanced Art classes at the University of Southern Mississippi.

At the age of twenty-seven, I immigrated to New Orleans. I commenced my studies at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts, and it was there that I realized I could pursue a career as an artist. Along with my use of vibrant and intense color, I enjoy painting with a palette knife for its textural and rhythmic effects.
