Also known as C. D. Barraud, Mr Barrow. Artist (Painter) Despite living mostly in New Zealand, Barraud spent several years in Victoria and in 1854 he exhibited several paintings, all of New Zealand scenes, at the Melbourne Exhibition. Barraud is represented in most of New Zealand's major galleries but there are no Australian works known.

Charles Decimus Barraud (1822-1897), one of a family of English artists, migrated to New Zealand in 1849. A noted watercolourist, he was a founder and later president of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts. Barraud's work reached a wide audience with the reproduction in 1877 of thirty paintings in his book New Zealand: Graphic and Descriptive.

C. D. Barraud painted mainly in watercolour, but also did a few oils. He attempted some portraits of notable Maori chiefs, but as paintings they were much inferior to his landscapes. He belongs to the same period as John Gully but is not of the same talent.

Feb 01, 2017 · Charles Decimus Barraud was a New Zealand pharmacist and artist born in Camberwell, Surrey, England 1822. He emigrated with his family to New Zealand, arriving in Wellington in August 1849. His wife was a cousin of Judge Henry Samuel Chapman, and it was Chapman who encouraged the emigration, providing the Barrauds with a cottage until their own house had been built.
