Born in NYC on Oct. 31, 1893, the son of artist John Califano. As a child Eugene learned to paint in his father's studio and by 15 was an accomplished painter. He returned to Italy in 1910 and further studied with Califano studied with Capuano, Celentano, Borgoni, and Giardiello. He was badly gassed while in the Army in France during WWI.
