Celia Pym is an artist working with knitting, darning and embroidery. She teaches art. I started knitting in 2001 as a warm up activity. To get me settled in my studio I would knit to ready my fingers and get thinking. I soon discovered that I would knit for whole afternoons. The warm up became my main project.

Having studied sculpture at Harvard, obtained a diploma of education at University College London and an MA in constructed textiles at the Royal College of Art, London, she then went on in her early 30s to train as a nurse.

Celia Pym was UK Craft Resident at Cove Park for 8 weeks in 2016. She studied Sculpture at Harvard University, Massachusetts and then completed an MA in textiles at RCA, London where she currently lives and works. Her textile practice has a strong relationship to narrative and is often very sculptural, incorporating darned garments, knitted and embroidered textiles and public textile events.

Mar 15, 2017 · A traditional hand knitted garment the artist gathered from Annemor Sundbø’s Ragpile collection in Norway. Initially the most damaged item in the warehouse, Celia repaired the evidence of human wear by darning the holes. Her stamp on the garment is obvious, refilling the damaged tears with a neutral white thread.

TOAST has commissioned the textile artist Celia Pym to explore how a family of TOAST sweaters – and a pair of socks – has been worn over time.
