    Pikes and possibly other weapons were secretly made and stockpiled in the Chartist Cave during the summer of 1839. They were subsequently carried by Tredegar Chartists on the great march on Newport on November 3rd - 5th 1839. Visitors to Newport can still see the holes in the pillars outside the Westgate near the bottom of Stow Hill.
