Clair V. Fry (1901 - 1995) was active/lived in Minnesota, Arizona. Clair Fry is known for Portrait and landscape painting, poster and calendar illustration. Clair V Fry became a very successful Art Director and painter painting many calendar oil paintings for the “plant”. One of his many works was carrying on the “Gay Philosopher” series. He also painted the series the “Fischer Quints”, and the fisherman painting series where my Great Grandfather Long was the model, and he used us grandchildren on occasion as well.

I have an original painting by Clair V. Fry. a note on the back of the painting states: "Painted by Clair Fry, Hudson Wis. friend and head of art at Brown - Bieglow Scene: near River Falls Bought in1950's or later I have looked Clair Fry up on the internet and have found information about him but no information or reference to his original pieces.

Clair Fry is listed in ask art with auctions of 2 oil paintings but I am not subscribed to get prices. She died in 1995 and was a prolific artist so you should be able to get sales records. A local gallery or museum might be helpful in getting an estimate. 840 Views

I learned that the character is “The Gay Philosopher” created by Henry Major (1889-1948). However, the painting (in the above image) was painted by Clair V. Fry. According to a post of a smaller reproduction on Etsy, the above image is called “At the County Fair” and was done in 1951.
