Aug 04, 2019 · Clemence Wescoupe was a self-taught artist, and has exhibited his work in Europe and throughout North America. He passed away on 23 December, 2018. He was a good friend to our little gallery and will be missed, not just for his contribution to our collection, but most of all for the stories he was able to share with us of his experiences with the other great Woodlands artists.

Clemence Wescoupe was born in 1951 on the Long Plains Reserve near Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. In the 1970’s he began to study the work of Cree artist Jackson Beardy (one of the Woodland Group of Seven), learning much from Beardy’s mastery of formline and colour. As his style developed, he attained a sensitive command of negative space.
