Cosmo Alexander was the son and pupil of John Alexander, an Aberdonian painter and engraver. Cosmo was a portrait painter; however, the defining factor in his life was his belief in the Jacobite cause. He participated in the 1745 Rising, after which he went to Rome to seek refuge.

Cosmo John Alexander (1724-1772) was a Scottish artist who came to the colonies in 1765. He painted portraits in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Rhode Island between 1765 to 1770. He worked in Virginia between 1770-1771 before returning to Scotland, where he died.
