    Cuthbert Rigby was born in Liverpool on the 14 May 1850. He was apprenticed to an architect in 1865, but in 1872 he became a pupil of William J Bishop and became a professional artist thereafter. He lived in Southport for a while but moved to the Lake District, living in several places, including Kendal, before settling in Ambleside in 1906, where he remained until his death in 1935.
