Born in the middle of the Amazon rainforest, Francisco da Silva is perhaps the first popular Brazilian artist, after Vitalino, to become known nationwide, and even in specialized foreign markets. He began painting in Fortaleza, capital of the State of Ceará, his home since 1935, doing odd jobs in shoemaking, plumbing, welding, stonemasonry, and carpentry, and painting walls.

1992. Maria Helena Vieira da Silva left her hometown Lisbon in 1928 with the intention to study sculpture at the Académie La Grande Chaumière in Paris. Amid the vibrant Parisian art scene, her interests extended to painting, which she studied with Fernand Léger, among others. In the mid 1930s, Vieira da Silva began working in increasingly abstract modes.

Vieira da Silva was the first woman to receive the French Government’s Grand Prix Nationale des Arts in 1966. She was named a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1979. Marking Vieira da Silva’s 80th birthday in 1988, the Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon and the Grand Palais in Paris presented a major retrospective of the artist’s work.
