Daniel Stookey Lutz was born in Decatur, Illinois on July 7, 1906 to Florence Stookey and Samuel Milton Lutz, who owned a music store in Decatur. The muses were plentiful in the young artist’s life: his father was a noted violinist and his mother a fine watercolorist and occasional painter. He was aware of his passion for art at an early age.

Daniel S. Lutz was a venerable figure in Los Angeles art circles, noted primarily for his highly expressionist, emotive paintings. After briefly attending James Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois, Lutz enrolled in the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where from 1928 to 1931 he studied sculpture with John Norton (18761934) and painting with Boris Anisfeld (1879-1973).
