Maitz is a Signature Member of the American Marine Artists Society. After graduation with honors from the Paier School of Art in 1975, Don Maitz received awards and world wide recognition for his work in the field of imaginative art, among them, ten Chesley awards, two Hugo awards, an Inkpot award, and a World Fantasy award for best artist.

Maitz has twice won science fiction’s Hugo award for best artist, a special Hugo for best artwork.
