    In 1973 Norma Millay Ellis, herself a painter and the sister of poet/activist Edna St. Vincent Millay (who preferred to be called Vincent from a young age), founded the Millay Colony for the Arts in upstate New York a residency for visual artists, writers and composers. The first residents arrived in 1974 and lived and worked in a small building on the Millay estate.
