Biography: At the end of his long artistic career, Nick Eggenhofer had only to walk a short distance to immerse himself in the history and art of the American West by visiting the Buffalo Bill Historical Center. He had, in fact, moved to Cody in part because the museum was located there.

Nicholas Eggenhofer was born December 5, 1897 in Gauting, Germany, in Southern Bavaria. His father and mother were Benedict and Margaret Eggenhofer. Nick was the oldest of four children. After hearing his father describe a visit to the Buffalo Bill Cody Wild West Show, Nick began a lifelong enthusiasm for the American Wild West.

Wild West enthusiast and artist, Nicholas Eggenhofer, was born in Bavaria, Germany, in 1897. At a young age, he was fascinated by romantic depictions of the American West. In 1913, Eggenhofer’s family immigrated to New Jersey. At nineteen, he took night classes at Cooper Union and apprenticed at American Lithograph Company during the day.
