She was familiar with Emily’s work since both her mother and grandmother (Queen Mary) owned paintings by Sartain. Princess Margaret was aware of Emily’s efforts to conserve Canadian wildflowers. In 1931, she decided to become a professional artist. She applied to enter her fourth painting for the first time in a show organized by the Society of Women Artists, London. A total of 600 entries had been accepted by the society. Queen Mary, the Royal Patron of the society, purchased Emily’s painting.

Numerous responses have been received. Unfortunately, the photograph inserted by the Sun editor is of the American Emily Sartain (1841-1927) and not the Victoria Emily. The two Emily’s are distantly related. Both were artists. The US artist specialized in human portraits and landscapes. The Victoria Emily specialized in floral portraits.
