The issue stems from a work at the Museum by Stanford Professor Enrique Chagoya called "The Misadventure of the Romantic Cannibals." The multi-panel work, which has been on display since September 10, depicts Jesus Christ receiving oral sex from a man, among other irreverent images involving Christian figures.

One particularly controversial piece of Chagoya’s was a multi-panel lithograph in the 2003 series “The Misadventures of Romantic Cannibals”, intended as a commentary on corruption in the Catholic church.
