    In 1946, aged 16, Frankfurther began her artistic training at St Martin's School of Art. Few works survive from this early period, but a Self-portrait with Plait (1946) (above) shows a wistfulness soon ruthlessly expunged from her work and from her later, more expressionistic self-portraits.
