Jan 17, 2018 · There is a noticeable amount of paintings by artist Evelyn Ritter—a large mural greeted me when I walked in, followed by the eye-catching royal portraits hanging in the center of the room and illustrated scenes from King Kaumualii’s life. From about 1796, Kauai was ruled by Kaumualii, a chief with more royal lineage than Kamehameha himself.

Their story was entrusted to artist, Evelyn J. Ritter, who created forty oil-on-canvas portraits. The series of portraits was the inspiration for the book, Always a People, comprised by Rita Kohn and W. Lynwood Montell. This book can be viewed at the Ziibiwing Research Center, which is open to the public Monday thru Friday from 10am - 6pm.
