Fred Biesel was born in Philadelphia in 1893 and raised in Newport, Rhode Island, the son of marine artist Charles Biesel. Fred Biesel studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, starting in 1913 and graduating in 1915. From 1915-16 he studied independently with urban realist painter Robert Henri.

FRED BIESEL was born in Philadelphia on September 27, 1893. He studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Art Institute of Chicago. His outstanding teachers were Robert Henri, John Sloan, George Bellows, Robert Reid and Randall Davey. Abroad he has painted in France and Italy and, in this country, in New England and New Mexico.

Proficient in drawing and watercolor, Biesel abandoned commercial lithography and became an easel artist. He moved back to Newport, opened a studio, and helped in his father’s saddle-making business.
