Born in Normandy in 1593, Poussin came as a young artist to Paris where he worked for a few years before moving to Rome in 1624, and staying there for most of the rest of his life.

At fourteen, he traveled to England to create a portrait of a “Lady of quality,” and other portrait commissions. In 1614, he received a pension from King Louis XIII to study in Rome, remaining there for fourteen years.
