Tinus de Jongh travelled to South Africa in 1921, his wife following with the family six months later, and settled in a cottage in Fish Hoek. Gabriel accompanied his father on rambles through the Cape Peninsula, searching for painterly subjects. Later he studied at the Michaelis School of Fine Art and the Slade School of Art in London.

Gabriel Cornelis de Jongh was the son of the renowned artist Tinus. He was born on 6th April 1913 in Amsterdam, Holland and arrived in Cape Town as a boy of 9 years old in 1922. Initially they lived in a cottage in Fishhoek, for six months and from here he accompanied his father on his extensive weekend hikes throughout the Cape Peninsula in his quest for painting subjects.

Gabriel Cornelis de Jongh. (6 April 1913 Amsterdam – 11 March 2004), was the only son of landscape artist, Tinus de Jongh. After a very close relationship with his father, Gabriel decided to pursue the same career, his father being both tutor and critic. Working in oil, watercolour, ink and pencil, he painted landscapes, still lifes, seascapes, wildlife, and depicted religious themes.

Some of his best landscape work was done in this short period of scenes in and around the Cedarberg area. He died in Bloemfontein on 17 July 1942 at the age of 57 years from lung cancer, having become one of the most technically skilled and popular painters in South Africa.
