    Feb 14, 2021 · Gerhard Marcks, (born February 18, 1889, Berlin, Germany—died November 13, 1981, Cologne, West Germany [now Germany]), German sculptor, printmaker, and designer who helped to revive the art of sculpture in Germany during the first quarter of the 20th century. Marcks was educated in the atelier of the sculptor Richard Scheibe; there he often sculpted animals in terra-cotta.

    Gerhard Marcks was born in Berlin on 18 February 1889. He moved into a joint studio with the sculptor Richard Scheibe after graduating from school in 1908. His artistic work was interrupted by military service in 1912 in Lübeck and the war. Bruno Paul offered the artist a teaching post at the Staatliche Kunstgewerbeschule in Berlin in 1918.

    Gerhard Marcks was born in Berlin, Germany, in 1889. His life as a sculptor began in 1907 with an apprenticeship with Richard Scheibe. His achievements as an artist led to a teaching position at the Bauhaus school in Weimar from 1919-1925 and the Giebichenstein School in Halle from 1925-1933. While teaching at the Bauhaus, Marcks met Marguerite Wildenhain and became her mentor and friend.

Works in the concentration were given by multiple donors. Our collection is one of the largest repositories of Gerhard Marcks' works in the United States. A large portion of this collection was donated by his former student, Marguerite Wildenhain.
