Apr 16, 2002 · Starting in the summer of 2000, Gerhard Stromberg began to photograph the landscape and housing of north-east England. The body of work that emerged eighteen months later is exploration of the relationship between landscape and memory and, more personally for the artist, Stromberg’s own relationship to his birthplace and his adopted homeland.

In his photographic work, Gerhard Stromberg both extends and tempers the conceptual agenda that defined the practice of his teachers Bernd and Hilla Becher and which has since filtered into the work of his peers, among them Andreas Gursky and Thomas Ruff. While there is an emotional detachment at play in much of his work, Stromberg also allows room for lyricism.
