In 1831, along withWilliam Dunlop andWilliam Rees, he formed the Literary and Philosophical Society of Upper Canada. He later developed plans for a "Lyceum of Natural History and the Fine Arts." His watercolours – as well as Gilbert’s portrait – were exhibited at the Toronto Society of Artists, the city’s first art show, in 1834.
