Spyro Gyra (a misspelling of spirogira, a scientific term Beckenstein jokingly gave a club owner as the group's name) began life on an off-night, when he and Wall set up on stage at Jack Daniels and began fooling around with instrumental music, tossing in everything from Earth, Wind & Fire and Marvin Gaye to Weather Report and the Miles Davis records Beckenstein remembered fondly from high school.
