Thomas Hennell (16 April 1903 – 1945) was a British artist and writer who specialised in illustrations and essays on the subject of the British countryside. He was an official war artist during the Second World War and was killed while serving in Indonesia in November 1945. Thomas Hennell was an artist and writer who specialised in preserving traditional countryside scenes and practice through his craft. After growing up in a Kentish rectory, Hennell trained in art and teaching in the late 1920s.

Hennell wrote offering his services in December 1939. He then offered services in return, simply, for food, accommodation and private soldier pay. He submitted some work to Clark and the Committee early in 1941 (7) and was advised to get in touch with the Ministry's advertising agency for poster work.In March 1941, one of his pictures was purchased for seven guineas (LD 880).

Hennell was named as an official War Artist in 1943 and sent to replace Eric Ravilious (who was missing in action) in Iceland. Later he took part in the Normandy Landings.... Eric Ravilious, too, helped Hennell with his recovery, providing a series of wood engravings as illustrations for The Poems of Thomas Hennell , published in 1936. At the outbreak of war in 1939 Hennell wrote to War Artists' Advisory Committee, offering his services as an artist. From 1943 he was a full-time salaried war artist.
