    J ames McBey was born on December 23, 1883 in Newburgh, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, educated at his village school, and at the age of 15 years he became a clerk in a local bank. He taught himself how to create etchings on zinc plates from a book on etching "Traité de la Gravure a l'Eau-Forte."

    Self-taught as an etcher, James McBey is widely regarded as the leading figure of the British Etching Revival. His work dominated British etching during the early part of the 20th century and the popularity of his prints was without parallel.

Etching, image size 6 7/8 x 12 7/8 inches, 1940, plate signed and dated, hand signed and numbered "XXXVIII" in ink. Born into poverty McBey was primarily self-taught, becoming a very well respected artist and leading figure of the British Etching Revival.

    Born in Newburgh near Aberdeen, James McBey attended evening classes at Graydon's School of Art and taught himself etching, building his own press at the age of fifteen. He moved to London to prepare for a one-man show at Goupil's Gallery, and shortly after this highly successful first show, he traveled to Morocco with James Kerr Lawson, beginning a long association with North Africa.
