Artist Statement of John Hawkwood His work is contemporary whilst nodding respect in the direction of the classical tradition. He is a fugitive from what he calls the "anti-art" trend which he feels, whilst it may be valid as a kind of entertainment, does not warrant classification as art. To quality as art, he believes, there should be an element of beauty in an object and skill in its making.

John Hawkwood was born in the village of Sible Hedingham in the count of Essex in about 1323. His father Gilbert was either a tanner or a landowner, far from poor. One chronicle says that young John moved to London to become a tailor's apprentice. However, the outbreak of the war with France gave him renewed opportunities.
