John Opie, (born May 1761, St. Agnes, Cornwall, Eng.—died April 9, 1807, London), English portrait and historical painter popular in England during the late 18th century. Opie received art instruction from John Wolcot (“Peter Pindar”) in Truro from about 1775 and in 1781 was successfully launched in London as the “Cornish wonder,” a self-taught genius.

As a young boy growing up in Cornwall, Opie displayed a natural talent for drawing. He was taken under the wing of the amateur artist and critic Dr John Wolcot (pseudonym Peter Pindar), from whom he learned the rudiments of painting and gained access to engravings after Old Masters, particularly those of Rembrandt’s portraits.

John Opie, best known for his paintings of jazz musicians, became interested in jazz while a student at Kent State University in the 1950s. After several years of teaching at private art school, Pasadena City College and Louisiana State University, Opie began working as a full-time artist.
