John P. Benson (1865-1947) John P. Benson. John P. Benson, the younger brother of noted Boston painter Frank W. Benson, was born and raised in Salem, Massachusetts, two blocks from the wharves that brought hours of enjoyment to John and his siblings. As a child, Benson spent much of his time outdoors pursuing his favorite sports, hunting, fishing, and sailing on the family’s boat, the “Viva.”.

John Benson painted right up to the time of his death in November 1947, at the age of 82. He died at home, in Willowbank, and is buried in Salem, beside his beloved Bessie, at Harmony Grove Cemetery. A memorial exhibition of his works was held in 1948 by the Guild of Boston Artists, and twenty years later, in 1968, a retrospective exhibition was held at the Peabody Museum in Salem.
