    Ward Lockwood, artist and founder of the art department at the University of Texas at Austin, was born in Atchison, Kansas, on September 22, 1894, the eldest son of Charles Alonzo and Cora Jane (Thomas) Lockwood. His father took him to the Art Institute of Chicago and arranged for him to receive art instruction at an early age.
