Jon Groom was born in 1953 in Powys, Wales. After completing a high school education, where he formed an important relationship with his art teacher Martin Preece, Groom went to Cardiff College of Art to study sculpture, later to switch to painting. Terry Setch, Michael Crowther, and Paul Beauchamp helped him to formulate his own visual language (see Room Painting, 1975).
