Judy Watson’s matrilineal family is from Waanyi country in north-west Queensland and her work – across painting, printmaking, drawing, sculpture and video – is inspired by traditional Waanyi culture. It is often concerned with collective memory and uses found documents to unveil the discrimination experienced by Aboriginal Australians.

Waanyi artist Judy Watson was born in Mundubbera, Queensland in 1959, and raised in Brisbane. Her fine arts education began in 1977, when she began a two year Diploma of Creative Arts at the Darling Downs Institute of Advanced Education in Toowoomba.

In February 2009 Judy Watson was appointed artist-in-residence at The University of Queensland’s Heron Island Research Station. Watson’s residency coincided with the official launch of the Research Station, rebuilt after being destroyed by fire in 2007. At the launch Watson heard leading scientists speak about their areas of research.
