Kiugak Ashoona Kiuguk (Kiawak) Ashoona was an accomplished sculptor and printmaker from Tariugajak, NU who later on relocated to Kinngait (Cape Dorset). Ashoona began carving in 1940 at the age of fourteen, making miniature sleds out of walrus ivory.

Kiawak (Kiugak) one of Cape Dorset’s finest figurative carvers, and his work is often celebrated for his distinctive aesthetic and his dramatic, powerful imagery. The son of renowned graphic artist Pitseolak Ashoona (RCA), Kiawak was born into an artistic family in 1933. Many of Kiawak’s siblings are successful artists in their own right.

Ashoona is a third-generation artist, the daughter of artist Kiawak Ashoona, who was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2000. She is also the granddaughter of the late printmaker Pitseolak Ashoona, whose art was shortlisted last year to be featured on Canada’s next $5 bill.

As a young woman she married Ashoona and she bore 17 children, Pitseolak was the mother of several Cape Dorset artists, the Ashoonas Ottochie, Komwartok, Kaka and Kiawak; and Napatchie Pootoogook. Ashoona died during a epidemic in the Nettling Lake area he was still in his prime, leaving Pitseolak to raise their young family on her own.

Jan 21, 2021 · Ashoona herself is a throat singer and multi-disciplinary artist who also works in soapstone, whale bone and creates wall hangings. Born in Kinngait but now working out of Ashoona Studios in Elie, Man., her art can be found among the Winnipeg Art Gallery’s permanent collection.
