Kunichika Toyohara was born Yasohachi Arakawa, the son of a public bathhouse proprietor in the artisan section of Edo. As a young man, he studied with the ukiyo-e artist Chikanobu, from whom he received his artist name. He then apprenticed under Kunisada and began to produce actor prints in the Utagawa style, though he never used the Utagawa name.

Kunichika is foremost known as a designer of actor prints. Apart from actor prints, he created prints of beautiful women and some designs with historic scenes. In the years 1865, 1867 and again in 1885 the artist's name appeared on eighth, fifth and fourth place in Tokyo ryuki saikenki.

Kunichika has become a very collectible artist, notably for his groundbreaking reinvention of the theatre triptych in the 1890’s and his earlier portrait series such as Mirror of the Flowering of Manners and Customs. He is remembered for his talent as a colourist, especially for the creative use of the new aniline dyes later in his career.

Toyohara Kunichika (1835–1900) was one of the most successful Japanese woodblock print artists during the Edo period. His passion for Kabuki shows drove him to mainly focus on producing prints of actors and actresses from Kabuki scenes, by using the Ukiyo-e style.
