Louisa Waterford. Louisa Anne Stuart was born on 14 April 1818 in the British Embassy in Paris, the younger sister of Charlotte Elizabeth. Her father, Sir Charles Stuart, later 1st Baron Lord Stuart de Rothesay, was the British Ambassador and had married Lady Elizabeth Margaret Yorke in 1816. Research for the Later Victorian Portraits Catalogue has resolved some of the puzzles relating to the full-length portrait of the artist and illustrator, Louisa Anne, Marchioness of Waterford, attributed to Sir Francis Grant. This shows Lady Waterford wearing a red velvet dress in mediaeval or Tudor style, in a large stone-built hall; to the right are an easel and portfolio, allusions to her own artistic practice.
