Leon Bellefleur was born in Montreal on February 8, 1910. In 1926, he enrolled at the École Normale Jacques-Cartier and after three years obtained his diploma in pedagogy. As a result of his education, Bellefleur was hired to teach elementary school by the Catholic School Commission of Montreal, a position he held for 25 years.

Bellefleur was part of "Prisme d’Yeux", he describes it as a group of artists opposed to the Automatist movement and his involvement in it. Bellefleur himself was influenced by Surrealism, but rejected pure Automatism. He describes his own work as being expressionnistic, rather than abstract.
