Launched as a ten-year initiative in 2003, Leveraging Investments in Creativity (LINC) represents a philanthropic experiment in using information, money, strategy, and partnerships to effect change in the support system for artists in the United States.

The survey sought to understand artists’ financial circumstances a year into the recession, and how artists were responding and adapting at that time.

For this survey, LINC recruited help to launch the survey by tapping into the social networks of designated informants who were not part of the main survey sample. Practicing artists who were invited by LINC to take the snowball survey were then asked to distribute the survey information to other practicing artists to encourage participation.
