Matt Siber (b.1972) is a Chicago-based visual artist working in photography, digital imaging, video, installation and sculpture. With an MFA in Photography from Columbia College Chicago, he has had solo exhibitions in Madrid, Berlin and Chicago among other venues. His first monograph, Idol Structures, was published by the DePaul Art Museum, Chicago in 2015.

The Chicago-based artist’s photographs and large-scale sculptures encouraged viewers to consider the structures of mass media communication and advertisements found in public spaces. It is apt that his exhibition debuted on the DePaul University campus at the start of the school year, when students are bombarded with advertisements.

My Take. Matt Siber’s work is dynamic, forcing the viewer to see the skies and landscapes of cities and highways through new eyes. The images disconnect the logos and signs from their buildings, making them float above—they look much better floating than connected to the businesses they represent!

I identify with him on many fronts, namely, altering the supposed reality of photographs to push the exploding medium forward, and a preoccupation with visual pollution and advertising.
