Michael McVeigh was born in 1957 in the post-war council estate of Lochee, Dundee located on the north west of the city, one of five children. He left school with no formal qualifications; however he wanted to be an artist and so began, unannounced, going to classes at Duncan of Jordanstone Art College, his presence being challenged eventually.

Edinburgh Michael McVeigh was born in Dundee in Scotland, where he studied Drawing and Painting at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art from 1977 – 1982. He did some early paintings as a muralist, which can be seen at the Dundee Centre of Contemporary Arts, Scotland and the Bowling Club.
