    Miyashita Zenji was born in Kyoto into a line of distinguished ceramists but was trained academically by the ceramic-sculptor Kiyomizu Kyubey (1922-2006) at Kyoto Municipal University of Art and Music and then Kusube Yaichi (1897-1984). Young Zenji quickly made a name for himself among ceramicists and won international renown for his signature ombre effect, created using a Japanese technique called saidei in which colored clay is added to the surface of a vessel in stages to create a layered appearance.
